Hello Big Bird Lovers,

As I am writing this, the final steps of preparation are being completed for the I.M.A.A. Rally of Giants in Danville, Virginia. As you are reading this, you should be looking back on one of the BEST Rallies ever. Jeff Phillips, Bill Hamby, and countless others have worked very hard to make sure that the Big event in Danville is a memorable one. By having the event at the Danville Airport, it is possible to combine Giant Scale model flying...and full size. There will be some lucky individuals who will win a ride in a full size B-25. If you missed the Rally, shame on you! You know you missed out on a great time!

This Summer has been a great one for flying. Everyone I talk to tells me that they have flown more than probably ever before. The

weather has been great...and there have been a ton of events to attend.

But now that we have flown until we are about ready to drop, let me invite you to something that you've been meaning to do anyway. Before you put all of your Big Birds away for the winter (Yes...Californians and Floridians...some folks DO put their planes away in the Fall) how about looking over your fleet, and picking out one that flies slow and stable. I know you've got a Cub, or a Telemaster, or a Robinood 99 kicking around. Clean that slow flyer up, charge the batteries, and go down the street and find that kid that mows your lawn, or delivers your newspaper. Invite him, and his Dad out to your flying field, hook them up with a buddy box, and share the joy of your hobby.

I can think of no better way to make our great hobby grow, and no better way to encourage a young person (they don't have to be boys, you know...) to get involved in an activity that will teach them aerodynamics, mechanics, electronics, and all of the hands-on technical skills that they can carry over into the rest of their lives. In an age of instant gratification and video games, wouldn't you like to help some deserving kids experience what it is like to work towards a goal, and accomplish something very gratifying like successfully flying a model airplane?

And even if you don't have a suitable trainer plane kicking around, at least reach out to those neighborhood kids and invite them to your flying field. As the flying fields become more and more scarce, and father away from town, why not do what you can to share our great sport and make it more accessible to a youngster?

Meanwhile, we're getting ready here in Ohio for the Thistledown Flyers District III Mini-Fest. Every year, this event gets bigger and better...with top notch flyers, an outstanding barbeque, night flying...and oh yes, that Matt Chapman guy with his paint-ball splattered CAP 580 will be on hand...tearing up the sky in every way he can imagine. We'd love to have you come up to Napoleon on September 9, 10, & 11. Bob "Mouth of the South" Sadler will be on hand to terrorize everyone with his microphone, and Chip Hyde will be doing flying demos throughout the weekend.

Let me close by asking one simple question. Did you have a great time at the last I.M.A.A. event that you attended? Would you like to go to more of those events? Then how about grabbing your flying buddy...you know...the one who doesn't belong to the I.M.A.A., and get him to join. If every member would do that, our membership would double overnight. There's strength in numbers...and the I.M.A.A. is the only organization working to protect your Big Bird Flying Rights!
