Hello Big Bird Lovers,

It is with great sadness that I have to report that the IMAA has lost one of the key founding members...who was the backbone of this organization for many years. Les Hard passed away at age 90. I managed to twist Les' arm back in 1980, and convinced him that he should edit the newsletter for our newly formed organization.

It was Les' hard work and dedication that started HighFlight on the path to become the leading publication dedicated strictly to giant

scale R/C aircraft. Les gathered the material, did the editing, and in the early years typed the copy, and pasted up the copy boards, to create a wealth of information for those early big bird flyers. I sincerely believe that without Les's many contributions, the IMAA would never have grown to be the largest AMA Special Interest Group. Don Godfrey, IMAA's first President, has written a memorial article about Les. You can read it in High Flight. So long, Les...you will be missed! May you rest in God's Peace.

I am writing this column, having just returned from Ontario, California, from the IMAA Winter Board Meeting. The meeting was very productive, and the tone was very upbeat. We have some new faces onboard...including David Moro, the new Event Sanction Coordinator, Jim Repp, the District VII Director, and Bob Sadler, the new interim Safety Director. All of these guys are full of energy and enthusiasm, and are eager to work to make your IMAA a bigger, better and stronger organization.

Our Direct Mail program to bring back lapsed members has been a success, and we are moving forward to bring back as many members as we can. As I always do, I like to remind members that if each of you just brought in one new member, our ranks would be doubled. The I.M.A.A. is the last line of defense in support of your favorite hobby. Don't you believe that defense should be a strong one?

Our new Event Coordinator David Moro reports that the number of Event Sanctions is up. The quantity, and quality of IMAA meets keeps getting better and better. The IMAA Winter Rally will already be history by the time you read this column. IMAA will celebrate its 25th birthday this year at Toledo...and it's hard to believe that the world famous Joe Nall Meet is just around the corner...If you'll pardon my bragging, the Thistledown Flyers Chapter 2 meet has been designated as the official District III Mini-Fest once again. And now we're proud to announce that Matt Chapman will be at the Thistledown Fly-in...with his amazing full size CAP aerobatic show plane. It's just one more reason to plan to be in Napoleon, Ohio in September. Click here for more info on the Mini-Fest.

So...go out to the shop. Cycle your batteries, check over the control linkages (Go ahead and wave your plane around the room while making zooming noises...but don't get caught at it...) and get ready for another great flying season. Your IMAA Directors and officers are hard at work...giving back to the members...Have Fun!
