I.M.A.A. Vice-President

Hello Big Bird Lovers,

Well, it is amazing how fast things can change. In the last issue of HighFlight, I was just an active supporter of the I.M.A.A. With this issue, I find myself filling the seat of Vice-President. I'd like the thank the board of directors for their vote of confidence in me, and I would particularly like to thank the outgoing Vice-President, Bob Bush.

Bob served the I.M.A.A. as Safety Director, Legal Advisor, and Vice-President, and was always a very active, hard working "behind the scenes" kind of guy. Unfortunately for I.M.A.A., Bob's employer (the State of Ohio) is insisting on at least 50 hours of his time each week, and something had to go ... with the net result that I am going to assume the duties of Vice-President.

Thanks for all your hard work and good humor, Bob. You are going to be missed!

What does the V.P. do anyway? Well, the official definition of the job is to supervise the Webmaster ... and the Events Coordinator, and to assist the President as needed. Fortunately, we have Andy Smith, who is a very capable Webmaster, and Andy Argenio, who does a fine job of coordinating all of the fly-ins and Rallies around the country ... so my job will be pretty easy.

As I have said many times in this column, "if it is good for I.M.A.A., then it is good for me." I have always been a strong supporter of our organization since it was founded (coming up on 25 years ago), and I want to continue to do so. I.M.A.A. is the largest of the A.M.A. Special Interest Groups, and we are the only unified voice to represent the issues and concerns of Big Bird flyers. I.M.A.A. was instrumental in getting the A.M.A. weight limits raised to practical levels, and created a safety inspection program that is unequaled anywhere else in R/C modeling. we have a long track record of running large, fun, and Safe events ... that emphasize fun and fellowship.

I will be leaving for the Joe Nall Fly-in in a couple of days, and am looking forward to another amazing event. It is one thing to have a big event, but entirely something else to not only have the biggest event, but probably the best. I know that Pat Hartness, Kirby McKinney, Bob Sadler (the one and only Mouth of the South), Mike Gregory, and all the hard working members of the Confederate Air Farce will be outdoing themselves to make this year's event better than the previous one.

The truly great part about being associated with the I.M.A.A. isn't the airplanes (although they get more sophisticated and more amazing every year) ... and it isn't the events (although the attendence from both pilots and spectators is growing) ... it is the people.

It is knowing you can walk up to a total stranger, and borrow a bottle of CA glue ... or a screwdriver ... or whatever else it might take to get your Big Bird back in the air ... and get a smile and an offer of help. THAT is what makes the I.M.A.A. so important to me.

This is an organization that is built on fun and fellowship. There are no trophies ... no awards ... no badges of accomplishment. There's only a lot of great times, laughs, and lots of great flying.

Now that I have an "official" title again, I want every member to know that I am dedicated to do whatever I can to help the I.M.A.A. ... and perpetuate what we have been doing for the past quarter of a century. If you should see me at a fly-in or a trade show ... please come up and say Hello!

Now get out there and fly something Big!
