Corky's Corner
Winter 2004
by Corky Heitman FS-6
I.M.A.A. Vice-President

Hello Big Bird Lovers,

It's Fall... and the flying season is winding down, but that sure doesn't mean that things are SLOW with the I.M.A.A.

District III Director Gary Smith has been working very hard, compiling the mailing list that is going out to all of the members who have let their membership lapse. That mailing will be sent out on November 5th. The smaller, test mailing that we did previously, was a big success, and brought back a lot of members, and even gained us a new life member!

Membership is what any organization is all about. The IMAA is the only voice to represent your needs and concerns as Big Bird Flyers... so it is in your best interests to help make IMAA a strong and vibrant organization. As I have said many times before, if every one of you would just recruit one new member... our membership would double immediately.

The Board will be having their Winter meeting at the AMA Convention in Ontario, California in early January. This great show (which Bill Northrop started as the International Modelers Show, back in the late 1970's) is the premiere R/C trade show on the West Coast, and with the move last year from Pasadena to the great Ontario Convention Center facility, it is a really impressive event.

We're proud to announce that there will be two new faces at the Board meeting. Casey Rowe has been confirmed by the Board as the new IMAA Safety Director (to take over for the retiring Andy Argenio). Casey rose to notoriety after his horrific accident last August, but he has a positive, uplifting attitude, and still has his amazing energy and enthusiasm. He is going to be a great spokesman for IMAA, and will be reminding all of us that Safety Comes First!

Also new at the Winter Board Meeting will be our new Event Coordinator, David Moro. David will be taking over for that multi-hat guy, Andy Argenio. Big THANKS to Andy for his years of dedicated hard work! David will be working with all of you to schedule your Fly-ins, Rallies, etc. He has an extensive background in computers and information technology, and will be working to streamline the Sanctioning process. Welcome aboard, David!

On the subject of things that are closer to home, our District III Mini-Fest in Napoleon, Ohio, was a huge success. The local media gave us a lot of coverage, and we had more spectators than ever. That shy, retiring fellow Bob Sadler, the "Mouth of the South" came up to do the PA announcing, and we had pilots from all over the country. Let me extend an invitation to you right now.... come up to Napoleon next September, and you will have FUN! Where else can you fly all day, fly under stadium lights at night, eat yourself into a coma, and laugh until it hurts? We are negotiating right now... and hope to be the designated District III Mini-Fest again next year.

So...even though we're not flipping props as vigorously as a few months ago...things are really hopping. IMAA is growing, the Board is working aggressively to serve the Big Bird Flyer's needs, the trade show season will be starting shortly. So go out to your shop.... do those airplane maintenance chores that you have been putting off, and then start a new project. The 2005 flying season isn't that far away. You DO want to be ready, right?

Think Big... Fly Big! Talk to you next year!
